COBOURG - Some teetered, some tottered,Christian Louboutin Specials but all made it safe and sound to the end of the 'Walk a Mile in Her Shoes' event June 11.
Close to 75 men and boys, most of them wearing red high heels, took part in the fourth annual fundraiser organized by Northumberland Services for Women. The goal was to garner $30,000 for the organization's shelter for women and children in the county and the counselling services it provides.
"It is our signature event," said Heather Norris, manager of resource development. "In our first three years we raised just over $60,000."
They added to that total by "just over $27,000 and counting,"Christian Louboutin Pumps  with pledges still coming in, Ms. Norris said Monday morning.
The walk along King Street "puts a fun spin" on raising money and awareness about what is "a very serious issue," Ms. Norris said.
"This year we provided almost 6,000 nights of shelter to women and children of Northumberland County who are fleeing abuse," executive director Linda Janzen told participants. "With the financial support that comes from this walk, we are able to continue to provide those services 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Most importantly, the message you men and boys are sending by walking and supporting this walk is that family violence is not acceptable and must end. We really, really appreciate your involvement."
She then cautioned the males to be careful walking in their high heels and to keep their eyes open for potholes and manhole covers as they walked from the Cobourg Public Library to Division Street. They were greeted with cheers by the people who came downtown for the Busker and Street Festival.
Port Hope chiropractor Dr. Robin Whale,Christian Louboutin Sandals wearing a slinky black dress, took part because "it's a worthy cause and it's fun." The walk, he said later, proved to be both "uncomfortable and invigorating." He netted $900 for Northumberland Services for Women.
"Walking on these things is pretty hard," OPP Staff Sergeant Brian O'Halloran confessed, before venturing out onto King Street. He raised $400.
Stephen Della Casa, chairman of the United Way Campaign, was a late recruit but managed to raise $1,000 in 36 hours. His shoes, size 14, "suit me well," he joked.
Callum Mireault, a YMCA lifeguard, followed in his brother's footsteps. Remi Mireault walked last year but couldn't this time because he's in Belgium so Callum donned his grandfather's kilt to continue what's turning into a family tradition. He raised about $150.
